The more you know about each Truk wreck, the more you will get out of your dives on board the Truk Master Liveaboard…. Today, the Rio de Janeiro Maru wreck.

This large 8-deck luxury passenger liner was built in 1930 and transported people all around the world until the Japanese Navy requisitioned and converted her in 1940, into a submarine depot ship first and then into a transport ship. In 1944, during the first phase of Operation Hailstone, the boat was hit by 1000 lbs. bombs and sunk in only a few hours.

The 141 meter (461 ft.)  wreck is now resting on her starboard side at 30 meters (90 ft.) not too far from Uman Island.  Exploring her from the outside, you will discover the large stern gun and the propellers all covered with coral and marine life. Once inside, the engine room is one of the main points of interest with all the electrical panels, the different engines and tools. In the rest of the holds, you can find a 5m (16 ft.)  machined wheel turret covered with corals, gun barrels and stacked boxes of beer bottles.
